A Buddhist Monk is murdered in Kalaymyo, Sagaing region

Yangon (Chindwin): A Buddhist monk was reportedly murdered at the Aung Yadanar School (Sanda School) Eight Faces Pagoda last night while the abbot was reciting a Buddhist mantra at the school.

According to the abbots at school, all monks at the school participated in the Full Moon night candlelight vigil at 7:00 pm, then everyone returned to their rooms at around 8:00 pm.

Yet, Sayadaw U Payinda remained beside the brick wall where he used to chant alone at night. The school said that he has been chanting the mantra alone for some time now beside the brick wall.

What happened is that around 10 pm, one of the abbots heard a quiet screaming sound, and he went out to check. Then he found Sayadaw laying down on the ground in a pool of blood with sword wounds.

The Sayadaw was proclaimed dead on the way while he was rushed to hospital, said the abbot.

It is learned that Sayadaw U Payinda was not involved in politics and was in charge of the Buddhist Theological Seminary, where he administered the 9th and 10th-grade scholarship students before the school was closed.

It is believed that the culprits jumped out of the brick wall, which is just 4 feet high and cut him off with a knife while he was chanting, and ran away.
