A group of five Democratic Senators pressures President Biden to impose additional sanctions on Myanmar

Five Senators from Democratic Party of the United States have called on President Biden’s Administration to impose additional sanctions on Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) to limit the financial revenue of the military junta on 25 August.

The five Senators are (1) Jeffrey A. Merkley from Oregon, (2) Cory A. Booker from New Jersey, (3) Dianne Feinstein from California, (4) Edward J. Markey from Massachusetts and (5) Gary Peters from Michigan.

A group of five Democratic Senators addressed the Hon Janet Yellen, Secretary of Department of Treasury and Hon Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of Department of State, urging the Biden Administration to use its influence to leverage diplomacy with regional partners in ASEAN to impose additional sanctions on Myanmar, and mitigate all the consequences of the authoritarian alliance solidifying between Myanmar and Russia.

The letter highlights the importance of immediate assistance to resolve Myanmar’s crisis and move beyond the Five Point Consensus, which the junta leader has stalled since he agreed with the ASEAN leaders in April 2021.
