Myanmar junta troops raid Karuna Clinic in Loikaw and arrest 17 health workers and patients

Myanmar junta soldiers raided Karuna Clinic located inside the Catholic Monastery of the Christ King Cathedral in Naung Yar Block, Loikaw city, early this morning (Myanmar Time) and arrested 17 health workers.

“The junta soldiers raided Karuna Clinic run by Christian Catholic Church today and arrested 17 civilians, including a surgeon, a medical officer, two Senior nurses (Catholic Sisters), five male nurses, and eight patients,” a local source told the Chindwin.

The junta troops surrounded the Christ King Cathedral this morning and blocked residents from entering the Cathedral, according to a local source.

Following the raid, the junta troops forcefully transferred all patients in the clinic to the Loikaw People’s Hospital.

The Karuna Clinic is a charitable health clinic that provides free medical services to the local people regardless of their religious and racial background.

Following the February coup, religious-based charity organizations are on the frontline of providing medical services in conflict areas, and they face constant threats and harassment from the military junta across the county.
