Yangon (Chindwin): The assassination for a retired major has sent the terror of the resounding alarm for the inner circle of military top brass. A gunman reportedly has shot a retired major dead and badly injured his wife in front of their house while they were leaving home for a walk at 7:30 am today.
The house is located at 26/AG1, 7 miles, 7C ward, Mayangone Township in Yangon.
The victims of the assassination are identified as U Thein Aung and his wife, Daw Theint Aung Thu. U Thein Aung was shot dead with four wounds by a gunman who has been readily waiting for the couple to get out of their house, while his wife Daw Theint Aung Thu was hit at her hand, leg, and waist is in a critical situation.
It is learned that the slain U Thein Aung was one of the key figures behind the screen playing a vital role in Mytel operation. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who is the coup leader, is believed to be one of the key stakeholders in the company.
Thein Aung is known that he was a retired major and was a graduate of the 28th intake of DSA (Defense Services Academy). And his wife, Dr Theint Aung Thu was a bodyguard to the former Commander-in-Chief of Navy and is a close friend of the current Commander-in-Chief of Navy, Brigadier General Moe Aung, who is the son of U Aung Thaung.
The sources close to the family said that Thein Aung was quite close to the current Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, General Maung Maung Kyaw. The Navy retired was said to have played a key role in coup leader Min Aung Hlaing’s MyTel group.
Until he was assassinated, Mr Thei Aung did not go public, maintaining a low key from his portfolios.
On some occasions, his wife was only seen at opening ceremonies of the company despite the fact that he was one of the pillars of MyTel operation in which coup leader Min Aung Hlaing is head of the company and retired general Khin Maung Soe, who lives in a villa in Kabaaye in Yangon and was a graduate of the same DSA intake.
Also, a journalist Aung Thu said that most of the cars used by Major Thein Aung belonged to the military.
The killing of Thein Aung has sent a wave of shock among the inner circle of the military top brass such as Commander-in-Chief of Navy Lieutenant General Moe Aung, Commander-in-Chief of Air Force Lieutenant General Maung Maung Kyaw, Brigadier General Tun Tun Nyi and Aung Pyae Sone, son of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Justice of Myanmar revealed in its report that Thein Aung joined the MyTel company in 2018 as a member of the company director board and worked as Chief Financial Officer until he quit the company in September 2019.
An engineer who joined CDM said that the assassination appears to be the inside work. This could not be the hands of the People Defense Force as intelligent information is so accurate that his address is precisely located and with the explicit knowledge of the time that the couple will be going out for a walk.
A local who lives nearby said that the junta normally came very quickly within an hour when the military informant was assassinated. But when head of the company owned by the military was murdered, the military junta came to the scene later after more than five hours.
Thein Aung was said to have worked for the military cronies’ companies such as Star High Group, Star High Co., Ltd, Jewels of Angel, Golden Majestic Star Mobile, Agro Pack, Telcom International Myanmar as company director, according to Myanmar Now.
