The explosion in Insein prison kills 8 people and injures 9 in Yangon city, Myanmar

A huge explosion inside the most notorious prison in the country has killed four civilians and three prison workers and injured nine people this morning in Yangon city of Myanmar.

The bomb explosion is reported to have occurred at 9:40 am this morning and had occurred in the hallway near the Administrative office inside the prison, where families of prisoners used to wait to get their names called to go inside to see their family members jailed in the Insein prison.

Among the dead, Daw Kyi Myint, mother of Ko Lin Htet Naing, who was the leader of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, was killed as she came to visit her son in prison this morning.

Special Task Agency of Burma (STA) – a local urban guerrilla force in Yangon region, has confirmed that the group is responsible for the bomb attack aiming to hit the head of the Insein Prison Administration, who was confirmed killed along with three other members of the Administrative staff.

STA says the junta security forces opened fire against civilians inside the prison after the explosion, which resulted in the killing of four other civilians.
